What is a root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels: the pulp. When that tissue becomes inflamed or dies — for example through deep decay, a crack or trauma — root canal treatment may be indicated.

During treatment the affected tissue is removed from the root canals, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and then filled and sealed. The aim is to preserve your own tooth where possible.

When can endodontics be indicated?

Symptoms differ considerably from person to person. Sometimes there is persistent pain or sensitivity to heat and cold; sometimes you notice little and a problem is found during a check-up or on an X-ray.

Whether root canal treatment is useful is always assessed individually after an examination. Sometimes another approach, such as a restoration or removal of the tooth, is more appropriate.

How does the treatment proceed?

Some treatments can be completed in one appointment, while others require several sessions, depending on the tooth, the number of canals and the inflammation present.

2. 2Local anaesthetic and keeping the tooth clean and dry.
3. 3Opening the tooth and removing the inflamed or dead tissue.
4. 4Cleaning, shaping and filling the root canals.
5. 5Sealing the tooth and, where needed, a definitive filling or crown.
6. 6Follow-up at your next check-up.

After treatment and points to consider

The tooth may feel sensitive when biting for a few days. You receive clear instructions about pain relief and eating.

A treated tooth is more vulnerable than an intact tooth and sometimes needs a crown to help prevent fracture. As with any treatment, results cannot be guaranteed; in some cases further treatment or removal is still needed. Good oral hygiene and regular checks remain important.
